Biggest Bloat Foods
You work hard to look good, we all know that. You're in the gym 5 days a week, you try to watch what you eat, and so far you've been having a lot of success on your fitness journey. And like everyone else, you're human, and every now and then you decide to skip on the diet and consume a food you love. Why is it that every time you do so, you wake up the next morning, look in the mirror, and look like you've gained a solid 5 pounds of fat? I'll let you in on a little secret. You probably haven't gained an ounce of actual fat, it's just that particular food you ate playing tricks on you. So don't despair, just know the facts.
It's called bloating, and it's not a fun sight. No, it's not dangerous, but it can really cause someone to become very falsely upset about their weight or appearance. It happens when your body suddenly decides to retain water, or produce internal gas based on a food you may have consumed. Certain foods (and their respective ingredients) can produce some pretty impressive bloats, so it's always good to know what caused this rapid degradation of appearance. Let's go over the list of some of the types of food that will cause you to blow up like a balloon, guaranteed:
Food High In Sodium: This one's the most common of all bloating situations; you decided to splurge, had a bit of a really salty piece of steak, or a few too many potato chips, or decided to go all out on salting that corn cob last night. Excess sodium will cause your body to retain water in all sorts of places, because water is attracted to sodium. It's not uncommon to put on a pound or two of water weight after an extremely salty meal, even if it did happen to be low calorie. If you don't want to blow up like a beluga whale, try to skip the salt, and watch the sodium content on nutrition labels. If you do accidentally go a little salt crazy, don't fret, just drink a lot of water and your system will eventually cycle all that excess water weight right back out.
High Carbohydrate Foods: Your body uses carbohydrates as a very efficient energy source by storing carbs as an accessible fuel called glycogen in your liver and muscles. When 1 gram of glycogen is stored as energy, about 3 grams of water is stored with it. This means that if you've been quite glycogen depleted (working very hard in the gym, or have been on a low carb diet), and you replenish your glycogen stores by consuming a good amount of carbohydrates, you can put on a lot of water weight quite quickly, and tend to look pretty bloated, or at least "bigger" for a while. Usually this isn't as bad as sodium bloating, and most muscle heads actually want this "inflated" look as it promotes a healthier, fuller, stronger looking physique. Don't be surprised though if the scale bumps more than it should after that big plate of pasta.
Raw Vegetables: Now don't start worrying, vegetables are still probably the healthiest food you can consume throughout your day. The thing is though, raw veggies have huge amounts of fiber, and can absorb quite a bit of water in your stomach. That means they take up a lot of space, and can cause you to look like a Macy's day parade float. Don't worry, this will pass. Also something to be a little wary of, most fiberous veggies produce a lot of intestinal gas, which, as well as being uncomfortable and...er...embarrassing, can inflate your lower stomach to the point where those tight jeans may not fit anymore. Seriously though, it's a small price to pay for the health benefits in those veggies.
Artificial Sweeteners: I love artificial sweeteners, and I use them on a daily basis. They allow people to stay on a stricter diet more efficiently because they allow someone to have a bit of a sweet tooth without any of the huge sugar consumption. They can, however, cause bloating, because your body can't absorb and digest them. They act like fiber and cause intestinal gas, which, you guessed it, pumps you up to snowman-like sizes. Again though, don't worry too much about it, just know what caused it.
Desserts: There's a whole host of reason that those big, sweet, sugary desserts can cause bloating. They're loaded with all sorts of carbs and sweeteners that both force your body to retain water and cause gas. Also, desserts that contain dairy can be incredibly bloating to those that are lactose intolerant (as will any dairy product.) Let me just say this: you're guaranteed to look like a beach ball after that heaping bowl of ice cream and apple crisp.
Carbonated Drinks: This one's a no brainer. Carbonated drinks contain little bubbles of carbon dioxide, which when consumed escape into your stomach and blow it up like a balloon. This can cause a lot of discomfort. Not to mention, most carbonated drinks are loaded with sugars and other artificial sweeteners, two other super bloat-promoting substances.
Bloating is annoying, that's for sure. Is it dangerous though? Not usually. It also shouldn't be a reason to get depressed about your appearance, because bloating is a temporary state. If you bloat up, just hop back on your diet as soon as possible, keep hitting the gym, drink lots of water, and your body will clear itself out eventually (usually sooner rather than later). And now that you know the top culprits that cause the biggest bloats, you'll be able to figure out what happened next time you look like the Michelin Man in the mirror.

All About Gluten
Upon walking down the grocery store aisles, you may have come across several foods that are "gluten free." They're not uncommon to see, and that simple phrase often finds its way onto cracker boxes, breads, soups, and all sorts of other products. You may even have heard the phrase "gluten intolerant," and may know someone who has this condition. But chances are, you're not really sure what gluten actually is, where it comes from, what it does, and why some people can't digest it. Well, hopefully this article will clear things up, and you'll be able to look at those kinds of foods with a new sense of knowledge and understanding. Hey, you might even try a few.
Gluten, unfortunately, is a pretty complicated substance. It's what's called a "composite," and is made up of several different proteins. It's usually found in wheat products, though there's a whole list of other grains that gluten can be found in, including rye, semolina, and barley. If you're at all interested, the specific proteins found in gluten are: albumins, globulins, gletlins, and prolamins. Pretty fancy names eh? In the most basic terms, gluten is just another piece of the puzzle when it comes to grains. It's just nature...right?
Gluten is usually used as an additive in the food industry to add texture to bread products, like crusts, muffins, or crackers. Gluten can make things chewy and more substantial, "firmer" in a certain sense. This makes it extremely useful for all sorts of baked goods. Gluten is also an excellent protein source, containing about 23 g per quarter cup. It's also an excellent source of iron.
So why take it out of food? Why are there such huge advocates of gluten-free diets? Is the stuff secretly bad for you? How could it be? It's just part of grains, and grains are healthy...right? Well, the good news is that gluten isn't as bad for you as certain people make it out to be. In fact, as mentioned above, gluten can be quite healthy in certain regards. However, there is a good percentage of people that can't digest gluten, and suffer from what's called "gluten intolerance."
While this could come about from a wheat allergy, the most common form of gluten intolerance is a disease called celiac disease. This disease isn't a fun one (not that any disease really is...), and basically prevents your body from absorbing the nutrients normally obtained through food. How does it manifest itself? Well, of all things, gluten is the culprit. For people with celiac disease, consumed gluten actually damages the small intestine through a malfunctioning auto-immune response to the gluten itself. Your body basically attacks its own intestines, and damages their abilities to absorb nutrients. Not good. Not good at all.
People who suffer from celiac disease, or another form of gluten intolerance, have to go on what are called gluten free diets. These diets aren't easy, and used to be ridiculously restrictive (because so many things contain gluten), but the food options for gluten intolerant individuals are gradually increasing. Generally all one has to do to find a gluten free variety of their favorite food is to look a little harder on the grocery store shelves. Most companies produce a gluten free variety of their popular products.
So what are the symptoms of gluten intolerance/celiac disease?

Celiac Disease Symptoms In Children:
- Abdominal pain
- Abdominal distention
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Intermittent diarrhea
- Malodorous flatulence
- Weight loss
- Vomiting
- Delayed growth, stunted growth or Failure to Thrive
- Grayish stools with a foul odor
- Dermatitis Herpetiformis
- Urticaria
Those are two lists I pulled off of the first reference listed. Now many are common occurrences with all sorts of diseases, so you'll definitely want to talk to your doctor about whether or not you may be gluten intolerant.
But is gluten itself bad? No, it isn't. It's just certain bodies can't digest it, and in turn those people become very malnourished and sick quite quickly, without any real obvious reason. Even people with extremely healthy diets can become quite sickly if they are unknowingly gluten intolerant. I may suggest trying out a gluten free diet if you're experiencing a few of these symptoms. Who knows, it may help.
So hopefully you now know a little more about gluten, its composition, its role in our bodies, and how it affects certain people. Now you can look at those gluten free packages and know exactly what's up. Cool...right?

Food Worship #12: Mushrooms
First, a little background of the white button mushroom. Its formal scientific name is Agaricus bisporus, and according to Wikipedia it is also called by the names: common mushroom, button mushroom, white mushroom, table mushroom, champignon mushroom, crimini mushroom, Swiss brown mushroom, Roman brown mushroom, Italian brown,Italian mushroom, and cultivated mushroom. That's quite a few names to keep track of, if I don't say so myself. Amazingly, when these things are full grown, their known by a much more familiar name, the Portobello mushroom. Funny how things work, right? Nowadays, the white button mushroom is grown and cultivated all across the world. The process isn't too complicated, first a bed of manure and fertile soil is put down and raised to about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The mushroom spawn are then laid over this growing bed, which is in a dark, sun-free location, and the temperature is then dropped to around 55 degrees Fahrenheit as the spawn take root. The spawn are then covered with about an inch of soil, and 3-4 weeks later they're ready for harvest and use in your recipes!
But why is this simple food so darn good for you (and tasty)? Well, let's explore the actual composition of these little mushrooms, and the nutritional benefits that lay within each one just waiting to spice up your diet and do your body some real good:
Immune System Support: White button mushrooms can help you stay healthy throughout the year with a couple of unique nutritional benefits they offer. Certain chemicals in these mushrooms actually interact with your white blood cells, and allow them to do their job more effectively. I suggest you try some out; they're actually quite tasty. If you don't like them raw, saute them up (without using too much butter) and add them to almost any dinner without any trouble whatsoever. It's a great low calorie filler that tastes heavenly.
So there you have it, the white button mushroom. I strongly suggest you try a few of these in your next available meal, and I can almost guarantee you'll be glad you did. They're tasty, nutritious, and readily available at your nearest grocery store. So what are you waiting for? Go pick up some fungus!

Up The Intensity!
Hey, want to lose weight fast? How about pack on some serious muscle in as little time as possible? Maybe increase your metabolism and push your body into building, burning, fitness mode? Well my friends, it's about time you increased your workout intensity.
Sure sure, everyone tells you to "push it," or work harder, egging you on in the gym, while you might be perfectly content to walk on the treadmill at an average pace so you can still actually hear the TV hanging on the wall, and watch the soap opera comfortably. To you, the gym might be just an annoying routine, where you'd like to be as comfortable as possible doing uncomfortable things (like walking, jogging, biking, or lifting heavy things.) That's all fine and dandy, and it's up to you, but not only will your progress toward any sort of goal be slowed to a crawl, but you're more likely to get into the rut that so many fall into --The rut of ZERO MOTIVATION,and of course.....low intensity.
Listen, your body responds to intensity. You'll feel your heart rate shoot skyward, beads of sweat pop out everywhere, and your muscles burn. It's uncomfortable, no doubt. But by doing intense things, in any sort of workout you do, you're forcing your body to adapt, to work, and to push itself to the next level. You'll burn a fantastic number of calories. Think about it, the harder your heart is beating, the more your calorie furnace is heating up. If you just saunter along on the treadmill all day, or lift weights far below the level of any sort of real effort, your heart won't get going, your body won't strain, and you won't increase your metabolic rate a bit. No effort = no results, it's as simple as that. These days, I see far too many people who are too comfortable in the gym. Listen, you can love the place, but love it for the results it gives you, not because it's comfortable. Be comfortable with pushing yourself. Here are a few ways to get on the seriously intense workout track:
HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING: Are you a cardio lover? Do you enjoy the treadmill, the spinning machine, or the elliptical? Well then, HIIT, or High Intensity Interval Training, is definitely for you. This is truly the next level of cardio. It'll take a shorter amount of time, and shoot your heart rate sky high (safely of course). The concept is pretty simple. Let's use the treadmill as an example. When starting out, warm up for about a minute with a medium walk to slow jog. Then, for the next minute or so, get up to a relatively comfortable pace, one you could keep for at least half an hour (a steady jog, I'd suggest between 5.5-7.0 mph for the average person). Hit this for another minute. Once that second hand turns over for the third minute though, the fun begins. Quickly increase to an 80-95% sprint for a good 15-30 seconds, making sure to push yourself to near maximum speed. Keep breathing deep and steady, and feel the burn in those legs. PUSH HARD. Then, when time's up, go back to your steady jog pace and cool down for about a minute. Then...you guessed it, repeat. For a beginner, I'd suggest four complete cycles (four jogs, four sprints), then every week or so get one more interval in there. Work up to a total of around 20-25 minutes of HIIT, and I guarantee you'll see some real results. Religious HIITers drop weight quickly and keep it off due to their vastly increased metabolism which is due to the irregular taxing of your heart and muscles. You'll build leg muscle too, especially if you play around with the incline. There's all sorts of HIIT workouts out there, google a few and try them out.
Oh, and HIIT works with any sort of cardio. Try some hardcore spinning intervals, or elliptical, or jump rope, or take it outside and use a hill, a bike, or just plain RUN. You can even walk and do it (have you ever tried to keep pace on a maximum speed walk? Definitely not easy). It's simple, and it produces guaranteed results. It's not easy, but it gives an amazing sense of accomplishment. And sometimes it's fun to see just how fast you can run.

HEAVY SQUATS: My personal favorite. To be honest, I'm not the cardio type. But guess what, to keep lean, cardio ISN'T A NECESSITY. Sure it's great to get at least something aerobic in there every now and then, but you can have plenty of intensity in your workouts just from lifting heavy things. Squats are one of the best high intensity movements out there, especially heavy ones. I believe one of my biggest idols, Nick Horton (coach of PDX weightlifting) put it best in a recent email to me by saying: A hard set of squats is really similar to a sprint, actually, as far as your body is concerned. Boy is he right. Squat a heavy set of five, and not only will your heart rate increase, but you'll feel taxed pretty darn close to your limit. Keep the reps close together, push as hard as you can, and you'll use so many muscles in such an intense, powerful manner that your body can't help but go into "beast mode," and fire up that calorie burning furnace. You'll also build a ridiculous amount of muscle too, quite quickly. I squat 7 days a week (I do NOT suggest this to a beginner, start off with 1 or 2 at most, with wide spacing between days), and it hasn't even been a year and I've already put 100 lbs on my max squat. I feel stronger than ever, and despite being about 10 lbs heavier I'm also leaner than I was when I started. Amazing right? The magic of squats is fantastic.
Bottom Line: Squats make you powerful and increase your metabolism enormously. Do them. But make sure your form is good. Get flexible and lift heavy.
PLYOMETRICS: Plyos are insane. They kill you with just one set, then on each successive set continue to kick you when you're down. But they feel GREAT. They build muscle, they build explosive strength, and they shoot your metabolism through the roof. They will force your body to go through calories like water through a sieve. And like any good high intensity exercise, after you're done you'll still be in high gear, burning through every new meal you consume, packing on muscle and dropping fat. It's called the "afterburn effect," and it's basically an increased metabolic rate that lasts for a certain amount of time after your workout. The more intensely you worked out, in general, the longer and larger the afterburn effect is. Hard, explosive movements force your body to work at maximum level with each rep, and therefore your afterburn effect will be quite large. So get jumping, leaping, and lunging.
Want a good plyometric workout? Start here, but please look all over the internet, because there are thousands of different workouts that will ALL kick your butt and produce serious results. People who practice plyometrics on a regular basis are stronger, fitter, faster, more powerful, and in general on a level above those who don't. Step up. Try a few. Start small, then really go for it!
Now clearly you can't just jump into a highly intense workout and expect to be all right. Don't start squatting twice what you are now, or sprinting for 12 solid intervals right off the bat. Chances are you'll burn out, or worse, hurt yourself. Increase the intensity in levels, or steps, starting small and working up to the truly daunting. Like I've said in my previous goal setting articles (read my most recent one here: http://foodguru802.blogspot.com/2012/01/short-term-key.html ), give yourself a lofty goal that you really have to reach toward, and set smaller short term goals that will allow you to reach it. Want a 50" box jump? Start with 24" box jumps for reps this week, then maybe 26-28" next week. You'll be leaping like a frog in no time, and the body fat will start to melt right off you with every successive day.
Also, one more thing to close down this article and send you on your way to success: Be intense inwardly, not outwardly. What do I mean? Well, focus all your energy toward that next sprint, that next jump, or that ungodly heavy squat. Don't waste it screaming your head off in the gym to get psyched up, or making a ridiculous commotion. Sure, everybody's got their psyche-up routine. I've got my own, and I'm sure it looks quite strange, but it doesn't necessarily draw attention. Keep it refined, shall we? Power toward the movement, not outward into thin air. Efficiency is the name of the game.
Push hard, then harder, then do it again. All it takes is all you've got. GOOD LUCK!
